These are the best cookies in the whole world. This isn't the recipe we use, I just googled the cookies, hehe. I'll get our recipe out later today, and post the directions we use, in case they might be different.
We put melted chocolate chips on top of ours, they really are wonderful.
Does anyone have a recipe for the Black and White cookies they sell on the east coast, mainly in NY.
I am so craving them.

Danielle,
My best advice is too stay in the kitchen while your Mom is cooking.
It's the best way to learn!

Here goes:
Black and White Cookies (this if for mini ones but I guess you can alter and make larger before baking)
For the cookies:
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspooon salt
3/4 stick of butter (unsalted, softened)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extracr
1/3 cup low-fat buttermilk
For icing:
2 cups confectioner's sugar
4 teaspoons light corn syrup
2 1/2 teasppons fresh lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon unsweetened Dutch-processed cocoa powder
1. Make cookies: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour, baking soda and salt together into medium bowl, set aside. Put butter into bowl of an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment. Mix until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add granulated sugar, mix until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in egg and vanilla. Mix in flour mixture in 3 batches, alternating with buttermilk.
2. Roll tablespoons of dough into balls, drop onto baking sheet lined with parchment paper, about 2 inches apart. Bake cookies, rotating sheets halfway through, until bottom turns golden, about 10 minutes. Let cool completely on wire racks.
3. Make icing. Whisk confectioner's sugar. corn syrup, lemon juice, vanilla, and 1 tablespoon water in small bowl until smooth. Add more water if needed, to acheive a consistency slightly thicker than honey. Transfer half of icing into small bowl. Stir in cocoa powder, thin with water if needed. Spread white icing onto half of cookies flat side and cocoa icing on other half. Let stand until set, about 30 minutes. Store at room teperature between pieces of parchment paper in air tight container.
Makes 4 dozen
